Plot summary
Peter Newmans is thirty, a sex therapist, and the author of a bestselling book arguing that desire distracts from success. His family and friends question why romance has never entered his life, and his patients and neighbors take him for gay. He is close to Michelle, his neighbor. She breaks things off with her workaholic boyfriend, Peter offers comfort, and she kisses him; he panics and a migraine sets in. The next morning, during basketball, a blow to the groin knocks him unconscious. At the hospital the staff tease him about his under-developed testicles, and imaging reveals a benign tumor that has pressed against his pituitary gland for years, the reason he never entered puberty. Peter wants the tumor removed at once, and after the surgery he recovers at his parents' house.
