Plot summary

In the 1960s, Jennifer Stirling is a wealthy socialite married to Laurence Stirling. A car crash leaves her unable to recall much of her earlier life or feel close to her husband, and she starts following clues in a letter addressed to J and signed Boot. Anthony O'Hare, a foreign correspondent, comes to the French Riviera to interview Laurence. Laurence is called away on business, and Anthony and Jennifer spend the summer together and exchange letters under the pennames J and Boot. In London today, the journalist Ellie Haworth has just ended a long relationship and is writing an article about a deceased editor at her newspaper. The archivist Rory McCallan lets her into the editor's archive, where she comes across a misfiled love letter to J from Boot.
