Plot summary
The Birkebeiners hold the throne at Nidaros with King Haakon Sverresson, while the Baglers, backed by Denmark, have taken power in eastern Norway. In Nidaros, the aristocrat Gisle and the former queen Margrete conspire against the king, and Margrete's daughter Kristin overhears them; her mother warns that speaking of it would cost them their lives. The king has an infant son, Haakon, born to a woman named Inga, and the child is the heir the Baglers want dead. Two of the king's agents, Torstein and Skjervald, are ordered to find the boy and keep him hidden, with the Bagler knight Orm riding after them.

- Lead actor Jakob Oftebro said in a promotional interview on Skavlan that the film was about Protestant Birkebeiners fighting Catholic Baglers, misplacing the Reformation by about 300 years, which led to widespread ridicule and criticism of Skavlan for not pointing out the inaccuracy.
SPOILER
The film shows Margareta Eriksdotter poisoning King Haakon in a conspiracy with Gisle to become queen again; in reality the historical Margaret was suspected of killing the king but was never proven to have done so.
