Plot summary

Julie is a student in Oslo who keeps changing direction: medicine gives way to psychology, psychology to photography, and by her late twenties she has turned to writing. She begins a relationship with Aksel, a comic artist fifteen years her senior. A weekend at his parents' house brings Aksel's suggestion of starting a family, which Julie meets with uncertainty. One evening, on her way home from an event celebrating Aksel's work, she slips into a wedding reception, where she meets the barista Eivind. Both of them have partners, yet they stay up together through the night, trading jokes and confidences but nothing more, and part knowing only each other's first name.
