Plot summary
Five years after his wife's death, Sigurd Svendsen still works on the Viking research they shared, raising their children Ragnhild and Brage alone. A meeting with funders in Oslo goes badly, and his work on the Oseberg Ship has exhausted the evidence behind it. His colleague Allan then brings him a stone tablet from Finnmark bearing a code; a gap in the tablet fits a piece of the ship, and with the piece set in place most of the runes can be read. They point to an island in a lake that may hold relics. Sigurd takes the children north for the summer with Allan and a small local crew, joining Allan's field partner Elisabeth and the hired guide Leif for the hike in.
