Plot summary
Konrad Nilsson loses his father in a mine accident, and his mother has too little money to raise him and his younger sister. The boy is sold at auction to a farmer in Norway, then spends years at Sjønstå earning only room and board. He runs away to the Sulitjelma Mine and is taken on as an apprentice. When Olof Wenström takes charge of the operation, he saves Konrad from dismissal and sends him to Hanken, the hardest of the mines, where the crew doubts he can handle the work and fears his pay will cut into their piece-work earnings. Rasmus, a team leader, urges him not to give up, and Konrad meets Svarta Bjørn, the canteen cook. Wenström offers him extra money to report on the miners, and Konrad, who hopes to bring his family to America, signs.
