Plot summary
As boys in Norway, Roald Amundsen and his brother Leon are captivated by the uncharted poles marked on a globe. Leon gathers the funds and the men; Roald commands the expeditions. Together they find a way through the Northwest Passage, though fellow explorers think little of Roald for the respect he pays the Inuit. The brothers join the contest to stand first at the North Pole, winning backers by promising that scientific work will come before speed. Word then reaches them that Frederick Cook says he has reached the Pole. His claim carries no proof, and a dismayed Roald turns his ambition south instead, keeping the new target secret.
