Plot summary
Bill Parrish, a media mogul, is days from turning 65 when a mysterious voice starts speaking to him. His older daughter Allison is arranging a birthday celebration; Susan, his younger daughter, is a medical resident involved with his protégé Drew, a pairing Bill doubts. In a coffee shop Susan talks with a young man and leaves before she learns his name. At the office Bill has chest pains. That night the voice summons him and appears in that young man's body. Bill works out who he is, and Death proposes a bargain: Bill lives on while he acts as Death's guide to human life. Presented to the household as Joe Black, the visitor is fascinated by food, feeling and everything others overlook.

- For television and airline broadcasts, a two-hour cut was made by stripping out most of Bill Parrish's business subplot. Director Martin Brest hated this edit and disowned it, so its director credit was replaced with the industry pseudonym Alan Smithee.
- Meet Joe Black was one of the few films to screen the very first trailer for Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, and some Star Wars fans reportedly bought tickets only to watch the trailer, then walked out once it ended.
