Plot summary
In Seattle at the turn of the twentieth century, oil magnate John Rimbauer has a vast Tudor neo-Gothic mansion called Rose Red built as a wedding gift for his young bride, Ellen Gilcrest. The house sits on forty acres of woodland that was once a Native American burial ground and appears cursed from the start, and men die while it is being constructed. Ellen begins a diary in which she records her unease about her marriage, her uncertainty about her own desires, and the unsettling events in the house. Two children, Adam and April, ease the strain between her and John, while the mansion's hauntings multiply and people close to John vanish without explanation.
