Plot summary
Josephine Chesterfield, an Englishwoman, works the French Riviera fleecing rich men while pretending to be a dim-witted American. Penny Rust, a small-time swindler, invents a young woman online to draw in wealthy men, then meets them as that woman's friend. The two meet on a train, where Josephine watches Penny work a mark and is impressed by how she does it. Not wanting a rival in Beaumont-sur-Mer, Josephine tries to send Penny to Port-au-Prince, but Penny turns up anyway and asks to be taught. Josephine agrees, and the pair work a practice con on Howard Bacon, a Southern tycoon. When Josephine refuses to pay her, Penny leaves, and the two set a bet over a young app creator, Thomas Westerburg.
