Plot summary
Athena Stone and her circle plan a hunt of people they call deplorables at a manor. In a forest, eleven captives wake with their mouths locked shut, and Crystal leaves the group while the others enter an open field and find a crate holding a pig and weapons. A rifle fires on them. Three captives reach a service station near Elaine, Arkansas, kept by an elderly couple, Ma and Pop, and work out that each was taken from a different part of the country, a pattern that matches the Manorgate conspiracy theory. Crystal comes in for cigarettes and finds them priced too high for the region.

- Universal suspended The Hunt's promotional campaign on August 7, 2019, in the wake of the Dayton and El Paso mass shootings, and several days later pulled the film from the studio's release schedule.
- The Hunt's trailer was attacked by some conservative media outlets for showing Donald Trump supporters being hunted by liberals, and on August 9, 2019, Trump tweeted that the movie coming out was "made in order to inflame and cause chaos", which news outlets read as a reference to The Hunt.
- The Hollywood Reporter said a pair of test screenings drew "negative reactions", and at the second, held in Los Angeles on August 6, 2019, audience members voiced discomfort with the film's politics, an issue Universal had not foreseen, though other studios had passed on the script for that reason.
- The elite hunters' word for their quarry, "deplorables", alludes to Hillary Clinton's 2016 phrase "basket of deplorables" about half of Donald Trump's supporters, and an early draft of the script made working class conservatives the film's heroes.
