Plot summary
Haley Keller, a swimmer at the University of Florida, is warned by her older sister Beth to leave the state as a Category 5 hurricane closes in. Their father Dave has not been heard from. Haley drives toward the evacuation route, then turns back and checks his condo, which stands empty except for the family dog, Sugar. She goes on to the old family home in Coral Lake with Sugar at her side, and down in the crawl space she finds Dave, alive but with a badly injured leg. An alligator attacks them there, and they barricade themselves behind pipes as the floodwater climbs.

- Alexandre Aja grew disappointed that the spec script stayed in one location with a single alligator, so he left a James Wan-produced project and spent over a year rewriting it to add locations and expand the characters.
- Kaya Scodelario called Crawl the most physically demanding shoot of her career, with 16- to 18-hour days; she broke a finger, lost about 12 pounds and came home bruised, bloodied and cut open.
- A house was built inside a warehouse and flooded with water tanks as filming progressed. Seven tanks were built, including a three-meter tall, 60-meter by 80-meter tank for the neighborhood, and 5 million liters of water were used daily.
- To stand in for CGI alligators, the production used Serbian stuntmen in green spandex suits, divers mimicking alligator movements underwater, a pole with a green-wrapped pillow held by director Alexandre Aja, and fake gator heads on sticks.
- Several endings were considered: one had the main characters eaten by an alligator, and Aja said they debated whether the dog would live, with scenarios including an alligator biting off the dog's tail, feeding the dog to the gators to escape, or the dog sacrificing itself.
- Crawl was the first Paramount film shot in Serbia; principal photography began in August 2018 and wrapped in September after 41 days.
- Kaya Scodelario was handed the film's leading role by Paramount executive Wyck Godfrey without having to audition, after entering negotiations to star in May 2018.
- The film's alligators were designed from a stuffed Mississippi alligator at the American Museum of Natural History and a real sheltered alligator in Miami nicknamed "Godzilla".
