Plot summary
By 2030 the world is stuck in a long recession and environmental damage has left America short of resources. The Humanity Bureau decides which citizens are efficient enough to stay and deports the rest to a city called New Eden. Noah Kross works as one of its agents. He questions Chester Hills, who insists he knows the truth. Then he looks into the case of Rachel Weller and Lucas, her son, who want to remain where they are. Kross asks his friend Agent Porter to hold back his report so the boy can play at a recital. The delay draws the attention of his supervisor Adam, and a defense contractor hands Kross a memory card.
