Plot summary
Smaug's fire drives the people of Laketown into the ruins of Dale, where Bard becomes their leader. Thorin sits on the mountain's gold and will not share what was promised to the town, sealing the gate while he hunts the Arkenstone that Bilbo keeps hidden. Thranduil arrives with an elf army to claim the treasure he considers his, and he and Bard are refused by Thorin. Freed from Dol Guldur by Galadriel, Elrond and Saruman, Gandalf warns them that Azog's orcs are marching, but Thranduil will not listen. Azog sends Bolg to Mount Gundabad to summon a second army, and Legolas and Tauriel see it on the move.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Unlike the theatrical version's PG-13 rating, the Extended Edition was rated R by the MPAA for "some violence", which makes it the only Middle Earth film to have a restricted rating and one of the few films based on a children's book to have an R rating.
- The third film was titled There and Back Again in August 2012, but in April 2014 Jackson changed it to The Battle of the Five Armies, as the original title felt misplaced once Bilbo had already arrived at Erebor in the second part.
