Oliver Stone
Biography
Oliver Stone is an American filmmaker who got his start as a screenwriter and became known for politically charged dramas, particularly about the Vietnam War. Born in New York City, he served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, an experience that later informed his work. He won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for Midnight Express (1978) and also wrote Scarface (1983). His directorial breakthrough came with Platoon (1986), which won Best Picture and brought him the Best Director Oscar, and he won that award again for Born on the Fourth of July (1989). He also directed Wall Street, The Doors, and JFK, among others, and later made the presidential drama Nixon and the football film Any Given Sunday. In recent decades he turned increasingly to documentaries, including South of the Border (2009) and Nuclear Now (2022). His honors include three Academy Awards, a BAFTA, a Primetime Emmy, and six Golden Globes.
