Plot summary
Raised in a cabin in the Carquinez woods by an old botanist, Lo Dorman is of Native American and white parentage. When the botanist dies, the white men around him want nothing to do with him, so he moves into a hollow tree in the forest. A mining camp lies close by, and the Baptist preacher Winslow Wynn has settled there with his daughter Nellie, whose beauty draws the town's men. Lo loves her and hopes she will marry him, though Sheriff Dunn wants Nellie for himself. Then Teresa, a dance-hall girl on the run from the law, takes refuge in the woods and comes to Lo's dwelling, and he shelters her.
