Plot summary
Friendless, a drifter with no luck in the city, sells the last of his belongings and keeps a few trinkets and a photograph of his mother. He hides aboard a train, is trampled by the crowds in New York, then rides west toward California, sleeping in a barrel that rolls off along the way. A cattle ranch takes him on although he knows nothing about livestock. There he notices Brown Eyes, a cow that gives no milk and has been put out to pasture with the rest of the herd. Told to fetch a horse and help bring in the cattle, he saddles a mule instead, falls off, and pulls a stone from Brown Eyes's hoof.
