Plot summary
Cattle from the Box K ranch graze on land the government will soon open to homesteaders. Its foreman, Don Carver, rides into Caldwell, Kansas with the cowhand Kentucky Rose, where the advance guard of settlers gathers on the Kansas-Oklahoma border for the coming Cherokee Strip land rush. Kentucky helps the widow Mrs. Riley fix a slipped rein on her covered wagon, and Carver says he wants only to get back to his cows. A run-in with a bully in town leaves the man soaked in a horse trough and plotting with an old friend named Bill Freel. Carver accidentally lassos Molly Lassiter, who has come to the Strip with her brother Bart and half-brother Noll Lassiter, and the encounter leaves him thinking about staking a claim of his own.

- Tumbleweeds was the last film of silent Western star William S. Hart, and its 1939 Astor Pictures re-release added an 8-minute introduction filmed when he was 74, in which he talks about his career and the "glories of the old west."
- The film is said to have influenced Cimarron, the 1931 Western that won the Best Picture Oscar and also depicts the land rush.
- The story dramatizes the real opening of government land leased to cattlemen: homesteaders had to register first, a cannon shot began the rush, and those who entered early were called "Sooners," the nickname Oklahoma still carries.
- After Tumbleweeds, William S. Hart retired to a ranch in Newhall, California and turned down the roles in sound films that producers kept offering, refusing to return to the screen.
