Plot summary
Fernand Naudin has put his gangster days behind him and runs a plant hire firm in Montauban. A summons takes him to the bedside of Louis, a childhood friend who now heads a Paris organization and is known as the Mexican. Louis names Fernand his successor and makes him guardian of Patricia, a teenage daughter who cares about little but having a good time. Pascal, a loyal hitman, escorts him to the Mexican's mansion, where the lawyer Maître Folace and Jean, a butler and former housebreaker, greet him. The business lives off a bowling alley, a brothel under Madame Mado, a gambling house the Volfoni brothers Raoul and Paul look after, and a distillery that Théo manages, and the men in charge resent an outsider taking over.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Monsieur Gangster (1963)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Critics disliked Les Tontons flingueurs when it came out in 1963, but the public did not, and its reputation grew to cult status: it is now a French television classic, with lines of dialogue and character names like the prostitute Lulu la Nantaise entering popular culture.
- The kitchen scene where the gangsters drink a vile, strong liquor was kept despite screenwriter Michel Audiard considering it useless; director Georges Lautner included it as an homage to the film noir Key Largo.
