Plot summary
Theo Decker, thirteen, is at the Metropolitan Museum of Art with his mother when a bomb goes off and she is killed. Before he dies, a man in the wreckage tells the boy to take a painting, The Goldfinch, and asks him to return a ring to Hobart and Blackwell. Theo keeps the painting hidden. He is taken in by the Barbours, the family of his friend Andy, and Mrs. Barbour encourages his interest in art and antiques. Returning the ring, Theo finds the antiques shop of Hobie Hobart, the partner of the man who died, and visits Pippa, a girl hurt in the same bombing. Then Larry, the father Theo has not seen, arrives with his girlfriend Xandra and moves Theo to Las Vegas, where he meets Boris.

- Author Donna Tartt was paid $3 million for the film rights to her novel, but disowned the adaptation because she was not allowed to write the screenplay or be named as a producer. She responded by firing her agent of more than 30 years, Amanda "Binky" Urban.
- The Goldfinch opened to only $2.6 million in North America, the sixth worst-saturated opening of all time for a film playing on more than 2,500 screens.
- About six months before release, after test screenings, Warner Bros. decided the film might perform poorly and "dramatically" trimmed its planned marketing campaign.
