Fred Grandy
Biography
Fred Grandy is an American actor who became known for playing Burl Gopher Smith, the purser on The Love Boat. Born in Sioux City, Iowa, he graduated from Harvard University in 1970 and joined the improvisational group The Proposition, later performing with it off-Broadway. Before The Love Boat, he took guest roles on several television series and played Ted Gates in The Girl Most Likely to... (1973), a made-for-TV movie. He also starred as Walt in the Saturday morning series Monster Squad in 1976 and appeared on Match Game from 1979 to 1981. The Love Boat ran for nine seasons, from 1977 to 1986, and he wrote several vignettes for it. In 2013 he returned to the stage in Sleuth. He later had a recurring role on The Mindy Project in 2014 and appeared in Knight Squad and Sprung.
