Plot summary
Giovanni Comini is promoted to federal secretary of Brescia in 1936. Achille Starace then hands him a delicate assignment, picking him for his flair for poetry: he must get close to Gabriele D'Annunzio and keep the regime informed about him. The poet, known as Il Vate, has long been intolerant of Fascism. With a new war thought to be near, Starace worries that the poet's popularity could undermine public trust if he spoke out against the pact between Mussolini and Hitler. Comini is soon a frequent guest at the Vittoriale, where D'Annunzio lives in seclusion with Luisa and Amélie. The old poet comes to like him, and Comini gradually becomes fascinated by the poet.
