Biography

Giuliano Gemma was an Italian actor who started out as a stuntman and in small parts, appearing uncredited in William Wyler's Ben-Hur (1959). Born in Rome and raised in Reggio Emilia until his family returned to the city in 1944, he got his first leading role from director Duccio Tessari in Arrivano i Titani. A leading part in Bernard Borderie's Angelique (1964) followed, and then the spaghetti westerns, in the first of which he was billed as Montgomery Wood; A Pistol for Ringo (1965), The Return of Ringo (1965) and Blood for a Silver Dollar (1965) counted among his greatest successes. He went on to important roles in Valerio Zurlini's The Desert of the Tartars (1976) and Pasquale Squitieri's Il prefetto di ferro, and won best actor prizes at the Karlovy Vary and Montreal festivals and the Grolla d'Oro at San Vincent. He later worked mostly in Italian television and took up sculpture. He died in 2013.
