Plot summary
Salvatore Mancuso farms a poor holding in the mountains of Sicily and raises two sons, Angelo and Pietro, beside his mother Fortunata, who serves the village as a healer and puts her faith in signs. Postcards from America showing enormous vegetables and chickens convince the family to leave for the United States. On the voyage Lucy Reed, a British woman traveling alone, draws the notice of the other passengers, and Salvatore is taken with her. Lucy wants to marry before she arrives at Ellis Island, since a woman cannot enter the country on her own, and Salvatore agrees, understanding that she does not love him yet. At Ellis Island the family faces the examinations that decide who is let in.
