Plot summary
Fresh from a victory over the barbarians, Constantine is called to Rome while serving with his father, Constantius Chlorus. The road leads into an ambush that Maxentius has prepared, since Maxentius wants the throne for himself and sees Constantine as his rival. Constantine's friend Hadrian is wounded in the attack, and a Christian household shelters him while he recovers. Livia, one of the Christians, falls in love with Hadrian. Maxentius persecutes the Christians, and at a public spectacle Constantine watches them put to the lions, jumps into the arena to shield a surviving child, and asks for the others to be released.
