Plot summary
Accio and Manrico Benassi grow up in a working-class family in a town south of Rome in the 1960s. Manrico is handsome and liked by everyone, while Accio, who is proud of the nickname Bully, is quick to anger and treats life as a fight. Accio begins as a seminarian, comes home to study Latin, and falls under the influence of Mario Nastri, a market trader who brings him into the Fascist party. Manrico goes the other way, into left-wing politics, and the brothers end up in opposing movements. Francesca, an aristocratic student, becomes Manrico's girlfriend and also a friend to Accio, who secretly cares for her. Their sister Violetta studies the cello in Rome, and their parents depend on Accio while being dazzled by Manrico.
