Plot summary
In college, Reed Richards and Victor Von Doom are friends who try an experiment as a comet called Colossus passes; it goes wrong and Victor is believed dead. Ten years later Reed, Susan Storm, her brother Johnny and pilot Ben Grimm take Reed's experimental spacecraft up as the same comet returns. Cosmic rays strike the craft, and after it crash-lands the four find they have powers: Reed's body is elastic, Susan can turn invisible, Johnny can generate fire, and Ben has stone-like skin.

- Arad bought the film for a couple of million dollars in cash and, without having seen it, ordered all prints destroyed to prevent its release, concerned the low-budget film might cheapen the brand.
- Speculation that the film was made only to retain the Fantastic Four rights was confirmed by Stan Lee in 2005, who said it was never supposed to be shown and the cast and crew were unaware.
- The premiere was halted, actors received a cease and desist order, the studio confiscated the negatives, and Eichinger told Sassone the film would not be released.
- Costume designer Réve Richards went to Golden Apple Comics for research and was swarmed by fans asking if he would be faithful to the comic; he said that was why he was buying the books.
- During the months of post-production, composers David and Eric Wurst personally contributed $6,000 to finance a 48-piece orchestra for the soundtrack.
- Stuntman Carl Ciarfalio, who wore a rubber suit as the Thing, worked with actor Michael Bailey Smith, who played Ben Grimm, so their mannerisms would match.
