Plot summary
A father who preaches fire and brimstone rules a family on a remote farm, with a mother at his side who demands obedience. He tells his children of a punishing creator waiting beyond the farm, and that fear keeps them at hard labor. Salvation, he promises, comes to those who obey without question, and relentless discipline enforces that faith. When exhaustion brings the youngest, Elijah, down in the field, the father moves to punish him for his petulance and banishes him to the outskirts. Caleb, the eldest, speaks up for his brother, but open defiance of the father is beyond him.
