Plot summary

Tom Edwards's best friend has disappeared, and Tom's life comes apart as a dogged detective investigates him relentlessly. The signs in the case all point at Tom, and the detective treats him as the prime suspect, yet strange and unexplainable events follow him wherever he goes, and no one, Tom included, can fit them into an ordinary explanation. Jamie, Tom's girlfriend, carries the same strain, and the two of them hide the truth from each other and from the detective. Nobody in the quiet town can say whether something sinister is out in the surrounding woods, or whether Tom is covering an unspeakable crime.
