Plot summary
In 1995 Hollywood, Robert Sandrich, a novice screenwriter, has written an autobiographical script drawn from the death of his lover from AIDS-related cerebral tuberculosis. It reaches studio executive Jeffrey Tishop, and both he and his wife Elaine admire it. Jeffrey sets a condition: the protagonist, Maurice, must become a woman named Maggie, and the love story must turn heterosexual. Robert first refuses to bend his principles, then takes the million dollars on offer and does the rewrite. He is soon a familiar visitor at the Tishops' house in Malibu, where the husband and the wife each feel a pull toward him. Robert and Jeffrey begin a sexual relationship, while Elaine's attachment to the young man is emotional rather than physical.
