David Soul

Biography

David Soul was an American-British actor and singer. Born in Chicago, he helped found the Firehouse Theater in Minneapolis in the mid-1960s and later appeared in New York productions of Baal and Serjeant Musgrave's Dance. After making his television debut in Flipper, he played Joshua Bolt on Here Come the Brides from 1968 to 1970. He portrayed Officer John Davis in Magnum Force (1973) and gained prominence as Detective Ken Hutchinson on Starsky & Hutch from 1975 to 1979, directing three episodes. He starred in the 1979 miniseries Salem's Lot and appeared as Major Oldham in The Hanoi Hilton (1987). As a singer he scored number one singles with Don't Give Up on Us and Silver Lady. In Britain he acted on the West End in Comic Potential and Blood Brothers and took over the title role in Jerry Springer: The Opera.

Soul first drew national attention in 1966 and 1967 as the "Covered Man" on The Merv Griffin Show, singing while masked because he wanted to be known for his music.
Big break
Soul's breakthrough role was Detective Ken "Hutch" Hutchinson on Starsky & Hutch, which he played from 1975 until 1979. He also directed three episodes of the show.
Beyond film
Soul took over as Jerry Springer in Jerry Springer: The Opera at London's Cambridge Theatre on July 12, 2004. The BBC televised that production in 2005.
Own stunts
Soul was one of the fastest drivers to appear on the BBC's Top Gear, finishing a lap in 1:54:00, though he broke the car's gearbox near the finish.
