Plot summary
At the close of the Ottoman Empire in 1922 Turkey, two American mercenaries work separate angles in the collapsing country. Josh and his men mean to profit from the chaos, while Adam, heir to a shipping company, wants back a vessel the Germans seized during the First World War and left in a Turkish port. Forces under the Ottoman governor Osman Bey capture them both. The governor admires their Thompson submachine guns and takes them on to escort his daughters to Cairo, with Aila as the girls' guardian. British warships blockade Turkish harbors, so Adam proposes carrying the party on his own American ship once the Turks hand it over. The group sets out for the coast, facing hard ground, the war, Osman Bey's scheming colonel and their own greed.
