Plot summary
Sergeant Joe Gunn and the crew of the tank Lulu Belle are the only survivors of their unit, and in June 1942, with the Afrika Korps advancing, their way out lies south into the Sahara. At a wrecked first aid station they meet a group of Allied stragglers led by British doctor Captain Halliday, who join the tank. The column grows: British Sudanese soldier Tambul and his Italian prisoner Giuseppe come aboard, then a downed Luftwaffe pilot, Lieutenant von Schletow. Short of water, the group reaches a deserted oasis and its ancient well, with the Germans close behind. Gunn decides they will hold the well against a German battalion.

- Some of the German soldiers in Sahara were played by 130 serving Royal Australian Air Force and Australian Army personnel rather than extras.
- The film's tank was a genuine World War II M3 Medium Tank in the Grant variant supplied to Australia, which had a different turret, and a Fiat G.59 in Luftwaffe desert camouflage also appeared; the 1943 original used the American Lee version.
