Plot summary
In the summer of 1813, Lord Wellington prepares to invade France from Spain. Major Richard Sharpe threatens Lieutenant Ayres with his rifle to stop the execution of Rifleman Skillicorn, accused of stealing a chicken, and Wellington makes him apologize for it. Ellie Nugent and her mother Bess come from Ireland to look for Will, Bess's husband, who went missing after a journey into the Spanish interior. Wellington refuses to help them. He gives Sharpe a different task: hand over fifty rifles to the guerrilla leader El Casco in exchange for captured British deserters. Ayres and his men ride with Sharpe, and the two women join the column, saying Wellington approved it. On the road they drive off an attack by French cavalry.
