Plot summary
Terrorists of the New World Revolutionary Organization seize American Travelways Airlines Flight 282 on the Athens to Rome leg of its run from Cairo to New York City. Under Abdul Rafai and Mustafa, the gunmen force Captain Roger Campbell to divert the Boeing 707 to Beirut and present the United States government with demands, threatening the hostages with death if they are not met. Flight purser Ingrid Harding, who is of German heritage, is made to single out the Jewish passengers, and a Catholic priest on board, Father William O'Malley, joins them in solidarity. Colonel Nick Alexander and Major Scott McCoy, recalled to duty, bring the Delta Force to the crisis.

- The C-130 Hercules flown by the commandos was an Israeli Air Force aircraft dressed up with a false registration and US Air Force markings, because the USAF refuses to help on any film involving the theft of an aircraft.
- The hijacked airliner was a real Boeing 707 sitting in storage at Tel Aviv, leased to Golan-Globus just after the TWA 847 hijacking. It was first painted as American Transworld Airlines, then repainted American Travelways Airlines to avoid confusion and legal trouble.
- The rocket-firing motorcycle Chuck Norris rides was not off the shelf: Suzuki designed the 1985 SP600 for the film, then handed the modified and armed machine to the production in Israel before shooting began.
