Plot summary
Matthew Quigley is an American who carries a rifle he has modified to hit targets at extraordinary distances. He answers an Australian newspaper advertisement for a man with his talent, replying with four words and a copy of the advertisement pierced by six bullet holes. In Australia, stockmen employed by the grazier who hired him try to force a woman they call Crazy Cora onto their wagon, and Quigley fights them. Taken to the station of Elliott Marston, he learns his shooting is wanted for the eradication of Aboriginal Australians. He refuses the work and orders Marston out of his own house.

- The protagonist's skill with his rifle has led snipers to call killing two targets with a single bullet "a Quigley", a feat named the same way in the Halo series of video games.
- John Hill first began writing Quigley Down Under in 1974, inspired by a Los Angeles Times article about the genocide of Aboriginal Australians and Torres Strait Islanders in 19th-century Australia.
- The script was first optioned in 1979 by producer Mort Engelberg for Steve McQueen, with whom he had teamed on The Hunter, but McQueen died of cancer shortly after completing that film.
- Several scenes involve falling horses, performed by specially trained animals that were not hurt; for the scene in which a horse falls off a cliff, the "horse" was a mechanical creation.
