Jon Batiste
Biography
Jon Batiste is an American musician, bandleader, composer and actor who grew up in Kenner, Louisiana, in a musical family. He released his debut album at 17 and studied jazz at the Juilliard School before forming Stay Human, the house band for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, where he was bandleader and musical director from 2015 until 2022. With Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross he wrote the score for the Pixar film Soul, and the trio took the Academy Award, Golden Globe, Grammy and BAFTA for it. His album We Are won the Grammy for Album of the Year, part of eight Grammy wins. He appeared in the documentary American Symphony (2023), about the making of his first symphony, and played Billy Preston in Saturday Night (2024), composing that film's score as well.

Beyond film
In 2011, Batiste's band Stay Human put out the album MY N.Y., which they recorded entirely on New York City Subway trains. The idea came to him after he questioned how to connect with people.
About the name
Batiste gave his band the name Stay Human, taking the title from his belief that when people interact at a live musical performance, it can lift up humanity despite a society that plugs in and tunes out.
Early training
Batiste honed his piano playing by working out songs from video games, among them Street Fighter Alpha, Final Fantasy VII and Sonic the Hedgehog.
