Plot summary
Claire Kubik is a defense attorney in Marin County, married to a woodworker she knows as Tom. Federal agents arrest him, and the charges trace back to a military operation in El Salvador years earlier, where nine civilians were killed. The man she married has lived under another name. He tells her he was at the scene but had no hand in the deaths, and that he is being framed. The lawyer appointed to defend him, First Lieutenant Terence Embry, is young and untested, so Claire takes charge of the case. She brings in Charlie Grimes, a former military lawyer who resents the brass. Claire's sister Jackie becomes involved with Embry.
