Plot summary
Fiona Maye sits as a judge at the High Court, where the cases before her concern families. Jack, her husband, tells her he intends to be unfaithful with a colleague half his age, saying her work leaves him no time. In court she is asked to rule on a hospital's request to give a blood transfusion to Adam Henry, seventeen, who has leukemia. The transfusion would let doctors use more drugs to cure him, but Adam and his parents belong to the Jehovah's Witness faith, which holds that receiving blood goes against biblical principles, and they refuse. Fiona visits Adam at the hospital to learn what he wants for himself.
