Plot summary
Conrad and Sally Walden live in Anville with their mother, Joan, a real estate agent hosting her company's party that night. Joan forbids the children to enter the pristine living room and leaves them with a babysitter, Mrs. Kwan, who falls asleep. Sally is well behaved and follows the rules; Conrad is imaginative and destructive. Bored by the rain, the two meet the Cat in the Hat, a wisecracking cat wearing a striped hat and an oversized red bow tie, who sets out to show the children how to enjoy themselves. The pet fish objects, but the Cat's games turn the tidy house into chaos.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Cat in the Hat (2003)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- After the film's negative reception, Seuss's widow Audrey Geisel halted any future live-action adaptations of her husband's work during her lifetime, including the planned sequel. When she died fifteen years after the film's release, it emerged that the ban on live-action adaptations was written into her will.
- Rick Baker was set to design the prosthetic makeup after his work on How the Grinch Stole Christmas, but he left over conflicts with the studio and production team, particularly Myers's habit of arriving late to meetings and refusing to come to makeup tests punctually. He was replaced by Steve Johnson, one of his earliest apprentices.
- The Cat costume was made of angora and human hair and fitted with a cooling system, with battery-operated tail and ears. On outdoor shoots a portable air conditioner was connected to the suit by a hose between shots to keep Myers cool.
- Before filming, giant props built for the film were stolen from the set. The local police found them vandalised with graffiti in a shopping mall car park in Pomona, California, and no arrests were ever made.
