Plot summary
In Los Angeles, nine-year-old Eva Gregory wants a dog and cannot have one. Her mother Amy does not consider her responsible enough for a pet, and Tom, her stepfather, is a police lieutenant who is allergic to fur. Her father Peter is a pilot, and his frequent travel means there is no pet for her at his house either. On the Venice Beach boardwalk, Azro performs with Fingers, a Capuchin monkey he has taught to steal from tourists. Two mafia men, Drake and Charlie, invite him into their crime syndicate, and the monkey burglarizes wealthy homes for them. Azro treats Fingers badly, and the monkey runs off, hiding in a park near Eva's house. He drops from a tree onto Eva, who names him Dodger and keeps him hidden in her bedroom.
