Plot summary
David Roberts is a teenager in Sevenoaks in the late 1960s, living with his parents and longing to follow a major football team. His father's strong disapproval of the game forces him to keep his support for Bromley F.C., a club that loses constantly, to himself. He attends every match, studies how the team plays, and keeps a scrapbook of the club's press mentions, however negative. His favorite player is the centre forward Alan "Stoney" Stonebridge, the team's star. Three adult Bromley supporters take an interest in him and encourage him. He also meets Ruby McQueen, the bright teenage daughter of Charlie McQueen, the club's tough chairman, and falls for her. He and Stoney become friends.
