Plot summary
Tim Templeton is seven and has his parents, Ted and Janice, all to himself, playing out his adventures with them. When they ask how he would feel about a little brother, he says he is enough, not knowing his mother is pregnant. Inside BabyCorp, an infant who does not laugh when tickled is sent to management, fitted with a suit, watch and briefcase, and given a cubicle. That baby arrives at the Templeton house and immediately commands the household, pleasing Ted and Janice while shutting Tim out. Tim sneaks into his room and hears him on the phone in a grown man's voice. The baby admits he can talk, produces a file on Tim, and warns that his parents can fire him.

- Kevin Spacey joined the voice cast of The Boss Baby in September 2014 alongside Alec Baldwin, but by June 2016 further casting news announced that Steve Buscemi had replaced Spacey.
- In 2021 interest in the film was renewed by a philosophical symposium dedicated to it; the announcement was widely taken for a prank, but organizers Jaime McCaffrey and Tore Levander insisted it was real.
- Miles Bakshi began recording Tim's voice at age 10, and over the long production his voice changed, making the work "pretty tough" by the end; he was 14 when the film was released.
- Director Tom McGrath based the film's look on 1960s design techniques and 1950s and 1960s animated films, believing contemporary animation chased realism too much, and screened the opening of Lady and the Tramp for new staff.
