Plot summary
By 1864, almost everyone at Martha Farnsworth's girls' school in Virginia has gone, leaving her with one teacher, Edwina Morrow, and five students. The youngest, Amy, finds John McBurney in the woods, a Union corporal who deserted after a leg wound in battle. Farnsworth tends the wound. Some of the household want him turned over to the Confederate Army as a prisoner, but she decides to let the leg heal first, and she hides his presence when Confederate soldiers visit the school. While he recovers, the women and girls bring him presents and a lavish dinner, and he returns their affection. When he can move he works in the garden; told he must leave soon, he asks to stay as a gardener.

- Sofia Coppola won the Best Director award at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival for The Beguiled, becoming only the second woman ever to win that prize there, 56 years after the first female director took it.
- Exteriors for The Beguiled were shot on the grounds of the Madewood Plantation House near Napoleonville, Louisiana, while the interiors were filmed in actress Jennifer Coolidge's house in New Orleans.
- Sofia Coppola initially had an aversion to making a remake, but changed course after watching the 1971 version at the urging of production designer Anne Ross, and became interested in telling the story from the women's point of view rather than the man's.
- Costume designer Stacey Battat used the Metropolitan Museum of Art's costume and fabric archives for inspiration, had corsets made for each actress, and used only cotton for historical accuracy, stone washed or enzyme washed to look worn in.
