Plot summary
The Rolling Stones brought their A Bigger Bang tour to New York's Beacon Theatre for two nights, October 29 and November 1, 2006, shows added to the schedule for the shoot itself. The footage used comes from the second night, and a short semi-fictionalized introduction follows the preparations beforehand. Historical news footage and archive interviews with the band break up the concert, and guests step up to play with the group. The first night's audience included a former American president, who gave a short speech, and the concerts raised money for his foundation. The title comes from a song the band released in 1972.

- Ahmet Ertegun, the 83-year-old co-founder of Atlantic Records and chairman of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, tripped and struck his head on the concrete floor of a backstage VIP area at the October 29, 2006 Beacon Theatre show; he died on December 14, 2006, and the film was dedicated to his memory.
- Shine a Light was the first film in which Martin Scorsese used digital cinematography, which he deployed for the backstage sequences.
