Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Samsara (2011)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • The crew filmed pilgrims circling the Kaaba in Mecca from a bird's-eye view, shooting from a newly built 40-floor building beside the mosque after getting permission from the building's owner.
  • Samsara was shot with three 70 mm cameras: two manufactured by Panavision and one specialty time-lapse camera designed by director Ron Fricke himself.
  • Unlike Baraka, which was scored to picture, Samsara was edited without music: composers Michael Stearns, Lisa Gerrard and Marcello De Francisci worked on sequences as separate pieces before connecting them.
  • Samsara was captured on 65 mm negative film but finished digitally, output as a Digital Cinema Package; producer Mark Magidson said the digital stage let them refine imagery and save shots they would otherwise have had to trash.
  • Distributor Oscilloscope Laboratories announced that with $1.8 million in box office earnings, Samsara had become the highest-grossing film in the company's relatively short history.
