Plot summary

Cara Rudland's career in Chicago advertising ends, and at her mother Lovie's request she comes back to the South Carolina beach house of her childhood summers. Lovie tries to set her up with Brett Beauchamps, an old flame, but Cara, newly out of a relationship, does not plan to stay. Lovie and her friend Flo join other locals in guarding sea turtle nests through the spawning season, a devotion Cara has resented; her own name comes from the loggerhead's scientific name. She is jealous at first of Toy Sooner, a pregnant twenty-year-old Lovie has taken in. Her brother Palmer, ambitious, holds it against her that she moved away and left their domineering father in his care. He intends to build condos where the beach house stands and to have Lovie live with his family. Cara and Lovie object.
