Plot summary

Philippe Darvas takes over the Theatre of Death in Paris, the Grand Guignol house his father once directed, and stages horror presentations there. At the opening night party, the patroness Madame Angelique asks for a preview, so Darvas has Dani Gireaux and a newcomer, Nicole Chapelle, perform a scene from The Witches of Salem. He hypnotizes the frightened Nicole first, and she plays it so real that Charles Marquis, Dani's boyfriend, breaks the scene up. Charles is a police surgeon recovering from a hand injury, and he has been looking into the deaths of three women, each stabbed in the neck and drained of blood. The instruments resemble knives used in one of the theater's performances.
