Plot summary
Quentin Lerner, a journalist from New York, comes to Bayonne, Louisiana, in February 1962 to interview Jane Pittman, who has just turned 110. Two men bring word that a girl has been arrested at a segregated water fountain because she is black. The next day Jane tells Lerner the story of her life, from her earliest memories as a child before slavery ended. In Bayonne, Jimmy urges the Black residents on in their present-day struggles.
