Biography

Beatrice Winde was an American character actress and singer whose stage, television and film work spanned several decades. Born in Chicago, she studied voice at the Chicago Music Conservatory and later at Juilliard and the Yale University School of Music. She reached Broadway in 1971 in Melvin Van Peebles's musical Ain't Supposed to Die a Natural Death, winning her a Tony Award nomination and the Theatre World Award. Her screen credits included Oliver's Story (1978) and Jefferson in Paris, and she appeared on television in The Sopranos and Law & Order. Later stage work brought her an Audelco Award for Best Supporting Actress for A Lesson Before Dying in 2001 and a Joseph Jefferson Award for her cameo role in The Young Man from Atlanta. She also received the Living Legend Award from the National Black Theater in 1997. She died in 2004.
